My Keywords Project
the quality is supposed to get better after its been processed.
So, I’ve been so busy lately i have not read any of our books or done a single Keyword. I just had a lot of work to do this week but don’t worry, I will do twice as much this weekend to make up for it. So be patient, you will have plenty to read this weekend.
Now that I think about it, Mr. Miller was right. Really, look at who you are. Who your friends are. This picture seemed perfect because we are what we listen to. In some form or another. Look at all the “cultural revolutions” we have had. They were all sparked by music. Even the High School “Cliques” were defined by music. The rockers, the punks, and gangsters. All of it had music behind it. We are the idiots, because when we listen to music we find something we connect to. What we feel or how we express ourselves. We do it with some one else’s words. Not our own. I know I am guilty of using someone else to express myself. When I’m angry or happy i want to listen to a loud and fast paced song. When I had a bad day, i like to sit back and listen to a much softer melody. Isn’t it funny how once everyone tries to be unique, we all end up being the same?
So, after reading my friend Paige’s reading log blog thing, mine seems a bit juvenile (I think I spelled her name right). After that realization, I figured its time to step it up a bit and approach this thing a just a little more of an academic manner. Not to worry, you will still get to enjoy my witty comments and narration along the way, it will just be presented in a more formal fashion. Well the reading log will be, my comments will still be just whatever I think. Often in parenthesis, like above for example. Anyways, I will use this time to direct you all (if anyone is out there) to my right; there, is my works cited and the end of my summery. I tell you this now so when I reference these books you wont say: what the hell is (Harris 25)? Well, that is mainly for the people who don’t know how to reference works cited. Which includes me, to an extent, so don’t be embarrassed, and don’t judge. Okay, on with the reading log!
Today, i continue with Rewriting and Rhythm Science. At first. In the beginning of the Introduction of Harris’s book, Rewriting, he talks about another authors work. The other author, J. L. Austin, expresses an idea about literature. is says: “…it is often more useful to ask what a speaker is trying to do in saying something then what he or she means by it,” (Harris 3). This stood out to me because Miller’s book is confusing. So I thought I’d ask what he is trying to do, rather than what he is trying to say beacuse it seems to me that D.J. Spooky is babbling. (By the way, I read the introduction to Harris’s book last week, I just remembered it now, so I didn’t just start this week. I promise.)After re-reading the first couple of pages all I could really see him doing was pointing out that others think for the masses. Maybe not that exactly, but in a way. For example: “It’s a carnivorous situation where any sound can be you, and where any word you say is already known. Flow, counter-flow. The idiot as a processing device, slave to the moment, outside of time because for him there is only the moment of thought. The idiot is a zombie, straight out of Thriller…” (Miller 9). I could be interpreting this all wrong but it seems to me he is showing us, us. What he sees in us. I imagine that when he is up on stage mixing music he looks out unto the crowd and sees zombies. The idiots. He even says: “Watch the idiots dance to rhythms they do not feel or understand,” (Miller 9). I mean, in that instance he was referencing the zombies from Thriller, but in the sentence before he compares us to them, so to me, he is talking about us. It’s not hard to see why he would think of us as idiots, at least, from his position. Being up on stage and with a single beat, you move maybe hundreds at a time. You control their movements. If you change the pace of the song, the bodies react. They keep the tempo of the song. In a way, the music thinks for them, and their body reacts to the thought. “This is the wildstyle. Check the Flow.” (Miller 8)
Well my friends, it has started. I have read the introductions to to two of my three books, well kinda. Rhythm Science was odd, it didn’t have so much of an introduction, just a beginning. The way the author writes is different. I think it will take a bit to get used to and fully comprehend, if that is possible, what the man is talking about. It will definitely make for an interesting read altogether. Rewriting sounds a bit like every other educational book I have read. The teacher wants to teach us a way of doing things. Simple. Although, i did notice toward the end of the Introduction of Rewriting the teacher briefly goes through the history of the word “interest.” The history in itself was not that enthralling, what made it stand out was the fact that I also have to read a book called Keywords (for whatever reason my damned computer will not let me underline the title so just pretend for me) which is mainly about certain words, obviously, and the way their meanings have changed over time. I have not read the book yet, but from what I’ve heard, i assume that is what it is about. So it was a interesting connection between two of the books i have to read. After learning a bit of the history behind the word “interest” i am actually looking forward to reading the book Keywords (for some reason it lets me underline it now, but not above? piece of shit. Sorry, it pisses me off i cannot underline the title above). Anyways, that’s all for now. I hope this was kinda what my teacher was looking for. Either way, its time for you to stop reading… and for me to stop typing to myself.
I am tired. The reading starts tomorrow. Don’t worry, it’s not like you were really that excited for it anyway. If you were, then go get a life and quit reading my conversation with myself which just happens to address others.
So, this is it my friends. My first blog talking about me getting ready to blog. Lame? yes, but if you thought that, screw you. I shall begin my reading tonight and my first “real” reading log blog thing will be up after that. I know your anxious and all but you will just have to wait. By the way I forewarn you: I am not really all that funny, but i figure what the hell? it is better than trying to be boring yeah? Besides, your here for my reading log, not my presentation of it.
